Charles M. Hughes, junior member of the law firm of Liddle & Hughes, whose offices are in the Parker building in Schenectady, enjoys a merited reputation as one of the rising young attorneys of the city. He was born in Poultney, Rutland county, Vermont, on the 10th of July, 1896, a son of Maurice and Libbie (Morris) Hughes, the former a native of Pennsylvania and the latter of the state of New York. Maurice Hughes is an accountant with the Remington Arms Company at Ilion, New York. The ancestral record of both the Hughes and Morris families, who are of Welsh descent, can be traced back through more than two centuries. Mrs. Hughes departed this life on the 12th of February, 1905.
Charles M. Hughes obtained his early education in the grade schools of his native village and continued his studies in the Troy Conference Academy at Poultney, Vermont, from which institution he was graduated in 1916. He then entered Norwich University, at Northfield, Vermont, which he attended until the time when this country became involved in the World war. He enlisted in the United States navy as a seaman for a term of four years, spent six months in the transport service and also did duty on a destroyer and a submarine chaser and was promoted to the rank of ensign. At the end of twenty-one months he was released from active duty in February, 1919, and in the following September matriculated in the Albany Law School, which in June, 1922, conferred upon him the degree of LL. B. While attending law school he studied law three years in the law offices of Judge John Alexander of Schenectady and then practiced independently for one year. It was in January, 1924, that he formed a partnership with Judge James W. Liddle, with whom he has since been associated. His practice is steadily growing and his ability is attested by his colleagues and contemporaries in the profession.
On October 1, 1924, Mr. Hughes was married to Elsie Klein, daughter of Oscar and Anna Klein of Schenectady. Mr. Klein is with the General Electric Company. Mr. and Mrs. Hughes reside at No. 32 James street, and they have many warm friends in the city.
