Milton E. De Voe, a practicing attorney of Schenectady throughout the past two decades, has an office in the Wedgeway building at No. 277 State street. His birth occurred in Albany county, New York, on the 9th of June, 1880, his parents being Isaac A. and Catherine A. (Houck) De Voe, who are also natives of that county, the former born in 1846, and died March 15, 1924, and the latter born in 1855. Milton E. De Voe traces his ancestry back to the year 1100. His uncle is the present owner of the old De Voe homestead, in Albany county, which has been in possession of the family for two hundred and twenty years. Isaac A. De Voe, who gave his attention to his trade as a painter throughout his active career, is now living retired in Schenectady in the enjoyment of well-earned rest.
The early education of Milton E. De Voe, acquired in the rural schools of his native county, was supplemented by a course of study in the New York State College for Teachers at Albany. In preparation for a career at the bar he then matriculated in the Albany Law School, from which he received the degree of LL. B. in 1904, and the same year was admitted to practice. He came at once to Schenectady, which city has always been the scene of his professional labors and where he has built up a clientage of large and lucrative proportions. Much of the success which has attended him in his professional career is undoubtedly due to the fact that in no instance will he permit himself to go into court with a case unless he has absolute confidence in the justice of his client's cause. Basing his efforts on this principle, from which there are far too many lapses in professional ranks, it naturally follows that he seldom loses a case in whose support he is enlisted. He has served as assistant corporation counsel of Schenectady and he is a member of the Schenectady County Bar Association.
In January, 1921, Mr. De Voe was united in marriage to Miss Margaret A. Murray, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Murray, both of whom were born in Albany and are now deceased. Mr. and Mrs. De Voe have one son, Milton E., Jr., whose natal day was January 6, 1922. The family residence is at No. 2 Haigh avenue, in Schenectady, in which city Mr. De Voe owns considerable real estate.
At the polls Mr. De Voe supports the men and measures of the democratic party. His religious faith is that of the Dutch Reformed church, while fraternally he is identified with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Knights of the Maccabees. His life has been an exemplary one in all respects and commands for him the high regard and esteem of those with whom he has been associated.
