Daniel M. Monty, son of Abraham and Mary Monty, was born at Plattsburgh, New York, March 1, 1840, died December 23, 1896. When a lad he went to Sandy Hill, Washington county, New York, and on arriving at man's estate engaged in contracting and building. He was also interested in the Kingsbury Blue Stone Quarry, of which he was superintendent and manager. He was a successful business man and was one of the substantial men of his town. He was interested in the welfare of the village, and held several public offices. He was an active member of the Methodist Episcopal church, which he also liberally supported. He married (first) Louise, daughter of Rev. Joseph Parry, who bore him four children:

Daniel M. Monty married (second) Carrie M., daughter of Alexander and Margaret (Reid) Barkley, and widow of William McLaren.

The founder of the Barkley family in the United States to which Carrie W. (Barkley) Monty belongs was James Barkley, born in Ireland early in the nineteenth century. He came to the United States and settled on a farm in the town of Argyle, Washington county, New York. He was a prosperous farmer, became a large land owner, and was a well-known and influential citizen. He married Margaret McDougal. Children:

(II) Alexander, youngest son and child of James and Margaret (McDougal) Barkley, was born in the town of Argyle, Washington county, New York, May 4, 1817, died January 1, 1894. He was a prominent farmer of the county, active in public affairs and represented his district in the state legislature for several terms. He was a Republican and a very popular and useful member of the party. His political career was marked by earnest effort in behalf of his constituents and by a strict attention to public duty. He was a man of honor and integrity, and died sincerely regretted. He married, October, 1844, Margaret, born October 4, 1824, died June 26, 1898, daughter of John and Sarah (McKee) Reid. Children:

(III) Carrie M., eldest daughter and child of Alexander and Margaret (Reid) Barkley, was born June 30, 1846. She married (first) November 14, 1866, William McLaren, born at Gallupville, Schoharie county, New York, February 11, 1838. He was of Scotch ancestry, his parents coming to the United States a few years prior to his birth. Children:
- William Barkley, born August 10, 1868; married Sarah Haggett and has a daughter, Margaret Reid, born August 18, 1902;
- Lawrence Reid, born February 23, 1872; married Maud Brown; children:
- Gilbert Barkley, born July 30, 1902, and
- Joseph Brown, September 18, 1905;
- Arthur C., May 5, 1874;
- Mabel, October 22, 1876; married Orson Culver Richards; son McLaren, born October 2, 1901.
Carrie M. (Barkley) McLaren, married (second) Daniel M. Monty, and had no issue. She survives her husband, and resides in Hudson Falls, New York. She is a member of the Presbyterian church.
