John Conway, born in Tipperary, Ireland, in 1820, was the founder of this branch of the Conway family in the United States, to which he emigrated about the year 1850. He died in Troy, New York, October, 1871. His first settlement was in the town of Salem, Washington county, New York; later he removed to Troy. He was a Democrat in politics, and a member of St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church. He married, in Ireland, his native country, Mary Cushing, born 1820, died April, 1896. Children:
- Patrick, born in Ireland, died in infancy.
- John, born June 5, 1841, in Ireland, died July 22, 1877, in Troy; was a coal merchant of Troy, and was police magistrate, superintendent of police and justice of the peace; was a Democrat and influential in the party.

(II) Henry Augustus, son of John and Mary (Cushing) Conway, was born in Troy, New York, August 8, 1858. He was educated in St. Peter's parochial and the public schools of Troy. He engaged in the coal business, which he successfully conducted for ten years. In 1883 he established an ale brewing business, and is secretary and treasurer of Conway Brothers Brewing & Malt Company of Troy. He is a trustee of the Troy Trust Company. He is a member of St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, and active Democrat. He is a member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks. He married, September 7, 1887. Teresa L. Healy, of Watervliet, daughter of John and Catherine (Ryan) Healy. Children:
- Nicholas T., born September 16, 1888; educated in public schools and Georgetown Preparatory School; graduated from Manhattan College, class of 1910, having taken a commercial course.
- Teresa May, educated at Sacred Heart Academy, Kenwood (Albany) and at Sacred Heart Academy, Torresdale (near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania).
- Florence, after a year at the Torresdale school entered Sacred Heart Academy at Kenwood, where she is now (1910) a student.
- Henry Augustus, Jr., educated at St. Peter's Parochial School and now attending Troy Academy.
