Schermerhooren (Schermerhorn)

JACOB JANSE, was born in 1622, in Waterland, Holland, it is said; though in 1654 his father was living in Amsterdam. He came to Beverwyck quite early, where he prospered as a brewer and trader. In 1648 he was arrested at Fort Orange by Governor Stuyvesant's order, on a charge of selling arms and ammunition to the Indians. His books and papers were seized, and himself removed a prisoner to Fort Amsterdam, where he was sentenced to banishment for five years with the confiscation of all his property. By the interference of some leading citizens, the first part of the sentence was struck out, but his property was totally lost. These proceedings against Schermerhorn formed subsequently a ground of complaint against Stuyvesant to the States General. [O'Callaghan's Hist. N. Y. I., 441.] He made his will May 20, 1688, and soon after died at Schenectady. His.estate was large for the times, amounting to 56,882 guilders. The dau. subsequently m. Gerrit Symonse Veeder. Reyer Schermerhorn settled in Schenectady; was one of the five patentees of the patent granted in 1684, and was the sole surviving patentee of the township in 1705, when he was complained of as exercising arbitrary power over the town affairs and rendering no accounts of his proceedings. In 1690 he was member of the Provincial Assembly from Albany County, and Justice of the Peace. In 1700 he was appointed assistant to the Judge of Common Pleas. Bouwery No. 4, together with the mills, heretofore called "Schermerhorn's Mills," after belonging to this family nearly 200 years, has lately passed into other hands; this property came to Reyer Jacobse through his wife Ariaantje, whose first husband, Otten, purchased it of the original proprietor, Pieter Adriaense Soegemakelyck.
