JAN JANSE, brewer, in Greenbush as early as 1660; made his will March 13, 1687/8, letters of administration issued to his sons Hendrick and Jan, Jan. 3, 1695/6; gave to son Johannes a red mare; to Hendrick 3 or 4 years after "my decease," a young horse or an old one; Arien, aged about 12yrs., to have two years schooling and a trade, and a red stone horse with a star in his forehead; when 20 years of age a new suit of clothes; the remaining property then to be divided equally among his six children; his Ch. were Johannes, eldest son; Hendrick; Arien; Mayke, wife of Capt. He was a brewer, also surveyor of the city of Albany; made his will Oct. 11, 1738, proved April 26, 1740, in which he mentioned the following Ch., save Maritie. He was buried July 15, 1739. JONAS, son of Hendrick, m. first Elisabeth Lansing, March 30, 1741; secondly, Elisabeth Vinhagen, April 13, 1756. The tradition is (not strictly true) that the first child bp. in the old church was Elisabeth Vinhagen, wife of Jonas Oothout, and that the church bell tolled the last time for her burial, she having d. March, 1806, in her 92d year. His first wife was buried March 11, 1754. His father bequeathed him a farm and Groenen Island. Gen. ABRAHAM, son of Jonas, early settled in Schenectady. During the Revolutionary war he was Capt. of a company in Col. Abraham Wemple's regiment, and was afterwards for many years prominent in the civil and military affairs of the city. He m. first, Margarita, dau. of Gerrit Janse Lansing of Albany, Nov. 27, 1767; she d. May 31, 1786; and he m. secondly, Lena Lansing, wid. of John Zabriskie of Hackensack, N. J., Nov. 14, 1787; she d. April 26, 1826, a. 75ys., 6m., 3d. Gen. Oothout made his will Jan. 12, 1811, proved July 18, 1822, spoke of his wife Lena, sons Gerrit, Henry, Abraham, and grand dau. Elisabeth Craig, and of the fact that he was then building the house which he afterwards occupied in Washington Street, now the residence of Hon. Samuel W. Jackson. Ch. b: Jonas, Jan. 11, 1769, d. HELMER, from Isens (Essen?), baker, was in Beverwyck from 1663 to 1676, when he died. Among other property owned by him in Albany, was the lot on the north corner of Pearl and State Streets, which he conveyed to Domine Nicolaas Van Rensselaer in 1675; Aug. 13, 1670, he bought of Pieter Adriaense Soegemakelyk 26 morgens of land, including the Schermerhorn bouwery in Rotterdam, and a village lot in Schenectady on the west corner of Church and Union Streets. His wife was Ariantie, dau. of Arent Bratt, by whom he had one dau. Tryntje, who m. Gerrit Symonse Veeder. After Otten's death, his wid. m. Reyer Schermerhorn.

Ouderkerk

JAN JANSE, cooper, in Beverwyck as early as 1664; in 1692 lived on the north side of Yonker (State) Street, and was commonly called Smalle Cuyper. He was the earliest settler of this name in or about Albany.

PIETER, (perhaps son of the last), m. Alida, dau. of Johannes Clute, June 13, 1704, in Niskayuna. He was a freeholder of Half Moon in 1720. Ch. bp: Johannes, Feb. 11, 1705; Johannes, Jan, 19, 1707, in Albany; Bata, Jan, 30, 1716/7, m. Abraham Quackenbos; Pieter, May 8, 1720, in Albany.

JOHANNES, (perhaps son of Jan Janse), m. Neeltie Claese, wid. of Hendrick Gardenier, May 20, 1695. An inventory of Gardenier's property was made in 1695; at the time of his death he was an inhabitant of Shotac, previously he had resided in Schenectady, where he owned a lot of 100ft. front on the north side of Union Street, one-half of which is now included in the Dutch church lot, and the other half is owned by Mr. Aaron Barringer. This whole lot was then appraised at 15 beavers seewant or 48 dolls. Gardenier left four Ch: Claes, Andries, Josina and Hendrick. JAN, an early settler of New Amsterdam, where for many years he and his wife kept an inn. Frequent prosecutions were instituted against them for selling spirits without license, and for selling to the Indians. In 1664 Maria Peeck was called "one of the oldest inhabitants of New Amsterdam." In 1655 he sold two houses in Fort Orange to Johannes Dyckman for 1627 guilders. The creek at Peekskill takes its name from him. He m. Maria (De Truy) Volchers, wid. of Cornelis Volkertse, in New Amsterdam, Feb. 20, 1650, and had the following Ch. bp, in N. A.: Anna, Oct. 15, 1651; Johannes, Oct. 12, 1653, settled in New York; Jacobus, Jan. 16, 1656; Maria, March 6, 1658; Maria Peek, wife of Jan, late in life resided in Schenectady, perhaps with her son Jacobus.

JACOBUS, son of Jan, took up land on the Second flat, south side of the Mohawk River, about five miles above the village. He settled on this land as early as 1670, in company with his kinsman Isaac De Trieux (Truax). The patent for the same was confirmed by Gov. Andross on the 29th Oct., 1677. He m. JOHANNES (Jan), sixteen years of age in 1661, was apprenticed by Jan Hendrickse Van Bael for three years to Philip Hendrickse Brouwer for his food and clothes. He m. Cornelia, dau. of Arent Andriese Bratt and Catlyntje De Vos. His home lot, in the village, was on the north corner of Union and Ferry Streets, having 100ft. frontage on the former street; later he purchased the 100ft. lot next west, of Jan Roeloffse, son of the celebrated Anneke Janse. On the fatal night of the 8th of Feb., 1690, both Pootman and his neighbor Roeloffse with their wives, were slain by the French and Indians.
