Free Heads of Families in the Schenectady County, New York Census: 1790

[Visitors to the Schenectady County Public Library may view the records from which this list was derived on microfilm or through our Ancestry subscription.]

These names in the 1790 Census for Schenectady County were classified as "All Other Free Persons" (i.e., free African-American and Native American) and did not have any "Free White" members. They were located adjacent to each other in the "Schenectady South of the Mohawk" listing. "Schenectady South of the Mohawk" includes what became the Towns of Princetown (1798) and Rotterdam (1820) as well as what is now the City of Schenectady.

The 35 "Other Free Persons" in Schenectady County in 1790 accounted for 0.6% of the county's population. See the 1790 demographic statistics for more details.

Additional information may be found in the National Archives publication, List of Free Black Heads of Families in the First Census of the United States 1790 (free PDF viewer required).
