Ysselsteyn (Esselsteyn, Van Esselsteyn)

MARTEN CORNELISE, was one of the early settlers and proprietors of Schenectady. On Oct. 23, 1668, he sold his bouwery to Claas Frederickse Van Petten and Cornelis Viele, and removed to Claverak; — Jan. 12, 1676/7 — Marten Cornelise, b. in the city of Ysselsteyn, and Mayke Cornelise, his wife, b. in Barnevelt, both living in Claverak, made their joint will. He was not living in 1705. They had one son, Cornelis Martense, from whom have descended the Esselsteins of Columbia County.

Appendix: The Glenns of Baltimore

This branch of the family sprang from Jacob Sanderse, son of Capt. Johannes Glen of Schenectady, b. Feb. 27, 1686. He left Schenectady when a young man and went to Boston where, in company with Oliver Wendell, he engaged in business. Subsequently he removed to Maryland and settled, it is said, near Elkton, Cecil county. It is not known whom or when he married, nor whether he had more than one child, Samuel.

SAMUEL, son of Jacob Sanderse, was b. in 1737, probably in Cecil County; in him the name first appears spelt with two ns, and it has ever since continued to be so spelt in Maryland. He m. June 7, 1762, Jane, wid. of William Beedle, and d. in the city of Baltimore, on the 24th of June, 1802, a. 65ys.; his wife d. on Aug. 15, 1808. Of this marriage there were b. Jacob, May 4, 1765, m. Charlotte Bauldwin, Nov. 5, 1789; his ch. moved from time to time to the western part of Virginia and to New York; Elias, Aug. 26, 1769; John Washington, Dec. 12, 1776, m. and left one dau., who m. …… White.

ELIAS, son of Samuel, m. Ann Carson, at St. Georges, New Castle County, Del., Aug. 21, 1794. He settled in Baltimore about 1811; in 1812 was appointed by Mr. Madison, United States district attorney, and his commission was renewed by Mr. Monroe. In 1824 he was appointed United States district judge by Mr. Monroe. After being on the bench for twelve years, he resigned in 1836 on account of failing health and retired to his country seat, Glenburnie, now a part of Baltimore, where he d. on the 6th of Jan., 1846, a. 76ys. JOHN, son of Elias, m. Nov. 12, 1822, Henrietta B., dau. of William Wilkins, merchant of Baltimore. As a lawyer he early developed such marked capacity in his profession that he soon rose to the head of the bar, and when he retired to take a seat upon the bench, relinquished the largest practice in the city. In 1852 Mr. Filmore appointed him United States district judge for Maryland, and he then took his seat upon the same bench that his father had occupied. He d. in 1853, a. 57ys. His ch. were William Wilkins, b. July 20, 1824; John, b. Feb. 20, 1829; Ann; Mary; Ella, m. James Kemp Harwood of Baltimore; Lucy.
