Teller

WILLEM, the first settler of the name in New Netherland, was b. in 1620. In a deposition made July 6, 1698, he stated that he arrived in the province in the year 1639, was sent to Fort Orange by Gov. Kieft, served there as corporal in the West India Company's service, was then advanced to be Wachtmeester of the fort; that he had continued his residence at Albany from 1629 to 1692, with some small intermissions upon voyage to New York, Delaware, and one voyage to Holland. He was a trader about 50 years in Albany, from whence he removed to New York in 1692, with his sons. He was one of the earliest proprietors of Schenectady in 1662, though probably never a permanent resident there, and one of the five patentees mentioned in the first patent of the town granted by Gov. Dongan in 1684. His allotments on the bouwlandt were numbered five, the foremost lot lying on the west side of, and separated by the Teller's killetie, from Elias Van Gyseling's plantasie; and his village lot, 200 feet square, was on the east corner of Union and Washington Streets. All his real estate in Schenectady was given, in 1700, to his son Johannes, who alone remained behind when the family removed to New York. He made his will Mar. 19, 1698, proved in 1701, and though a prosperous merchant, the inventory of his property amounted to only 910 pounds, 10s., 6p.; there is reason to believe, that as in the case of his son Johannes, he had distributed most of his property among his children before his death. His first wife was Margaret Donchesen; she died before 1664, in which year he made a marriage contract with, and (April 9) m. Maria Varlett, wid. of Paulus Schrick; she d. in 1702, the year after the death of her husband; the inventory of her estate amounted to 1,275 pounds, 12s., 9p. Ch. b: Andries, b. 1642, m.
